The vandalism of Lisbon by philistines!

(Chegado por e-mail):

«Good afternoon,

I came across your website after reading on Lisboa Live about the destruction of yet another beautiful old building in the historical centre of the city (the pink house on Rua da Lapa). A shocking story that now has 11,000 likes on Lisboa Live's Instagram page!

I am sick and tired of the the constant destruction going on in Estrela, especially, by the local town hall. What the hell do they think they are are doing!? Who gave them the right to destroy Lisbon's architectural heritage like this? The very thing millions of visitors come to the city to see every year. Talk about killing the goose that lays the golden egg. Blind and foolish - how much more idiotic can planning approvals be?

Thank you James for beeing so fond of our city and we hope you'll have the same strong attitude towards your hometown, wherever it is, and its cultural heritage.
Oh well...

Unlike many other European capitals that suffered the modernising intervention of aerial bombing by a hostile enemy, Lisbon's rich heritage was spared this devastating fate. But now the historical centre is under attack and in danger of being destroyed from within. Beautiful old buildings are being demolished and Bunkers "R" Us are working overtime to bring their spurious version of PROGRESS to the archeological ruins of city.
When did I last hear the Venetians or Viennese arguing that it is "necessary and inevitable" for their fine old buildings to be demolished because they are expensive to maintain and look like museum pieces? What a ridiculous and barbarous argument! Though a common one among - almost exclusively - our cultured and artistic architects.

The soulless and characterless buildings that have been praised by "Anonymous" have millions of almost identical copies in every town and city of Europe, whereas the old Lapa building that was destroyed to make way for it was unique to Lisbon. It was the kind of building found on postcards. No doubt postcard publishers are at this very minute rushing to print cards of the new buildings so visitors can show the folks back home what the NEW and IMPROVED Lisbon looks like.
The bunker in the last photo is in Rua Monte Olivete, directly off Principe Real. It is a very beautiful street of 19th century houses that for over a century remained untouched by time; no nasty developers and their vainglorious architects succeeded in smashing down a single one of its charming buildings.
But now, in the 21st Century, in a climate of utter philistinism and barbarism towards Lisbon's priceless heritage, a creative genius decided it was time to design a "Brutalism is Beautiful" bunker fit for this idyllic street, so as to put all the pretty but out of date houses to shame!
This bunker is obviously what the residents of Rua Monte Olivete were just crying out for, so weary of the monotonous beauty and charm of their old-fashioned street had they become! Their interfacial landscape must EVOLVE, and not be static and stale. It must look NEW and MODERN and SEXY whether they like it or not!! They will have no say in the matter since they are only the people who live there. The town planners know what is best for them and their architects' fantasmagorical brilliance will be imposed; their genius immortalized for all time in concrete, or steel, or both.

It is heartbreaking to see such barbarous, wanton destruction going on all around, defended by arguments that are pure wind, and to know that if the CML allowed this block-house to be erected in such a beautiful street then NO STREET IN LISBON IS SAFE from the triumph of vulgar philistinism.

If you want to build bunkers there are hundreds of cities in the former Soviet Union where the central planners failed their quotas. But egotistical architects prefer to build their bunkers in beautiful historical towns where they will be NOTICED!
